Phân biệt dạng bài Argumentative Essay và Discussion Essay

Mặc dù cả hai dạng bài luận Argumentative Essay và Discussion Essay đều thường được sử dụng để thảo luận về một vấn đề cụ thể, tuy nhiên chúng có những điểm khác nhau. 

Argumentative Essay

• Quan điểm cá nhân rõ ràng: Trong Argumentative Essay, người viết thường có một quan điểm rõ ràng và cố gắng thuyết phục độc giả chấp nhận quan điểm đó.
• Phản biện mạnh mẽ: Người viết thường sử dụng lập luận logic và bằng chứng mạnh mẽ để hỗ trợ quan điểm của mình và phản biện với các quan điểm khác.
• Ngôn từ sắc bén: Thường thì Argumentative Essay có thể sử dụng ngôn ngữ mạnh mẽ hơn, tập trung vào việc thuyết phục độc giả chấp nhận quan điểm của mình.

Ví dụ: Some people believe that government money should be spent on important things rather than arts such as painting and music. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Discussion Essay

• Thảo luận cả hai quan điểm: Trong Discussion Essay, người viết thường không có quan điểm cá nhân rõ ràng và thay vào đó, họ thảo luận về cả hai mặt của vấn đề.
• Ngôn từ trung lập: Discussion Essay thường sử dụng ngôn từ trung lập hơn, không có sự tập trung vào việc thuyết phục độc giả như trong Argumentative Essay.

Ví dụ: In developing countries, children in rural communities have less access to education. Some people believe that the problem can be solved by providing more schools and teachers, while others think that the problem can be solved by providing computers and Internet access. Discuss both views and give your own opinion? 

Cách viết dạng bài Argumentative Essay

Introduction

Phần mở bài sẽ gồm 2-3 câu: 

• Câu 1: Paraphrase lại câu hỏi, sử dụng từ đồng nghĩa và các cụm dẫn dắt. 
• Câu 2-3: Ở câu này, bạn sẽ nêu quan điểm của mình đồng ý (agree), không đồng ý (disagree) hoặc đồng ý một phần (partly agree). 

Body

Ở phần thân bài, bạn sẽ đưa ra những luận điểm nghiêng hoàn toàn theo ý kiến mà bạn đã chọn. Tránh trường hợp ở Mở bài viết “I totally agree” mà thân bài lại đưa ra những luận điểm 2 chiều. 

Ở phần này, bạn nên đưa ra ít nhất 2 luận điểm chứng minh cho quan điểm quả mình theo cấu trúc sau đây:

• Paragraph 1: luận điểm 1 – diễn giải – ví dụ nếu có
• Paragraph 2: luận điểm 2 – diễn giải – ví dụ nếu có

Conclusion

Ở phần này bạn chỉ cần tóm tắt lại ý kiến và các luận điểm chính.

Bài mẫu áp dụng cách viết dạng bài Argumentative Essay

Đề bài: More and more people think there is no need for printed paper newspapers. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Many people indeed believe that paper newspapers are not necessary to print due to the development of the internet in the modern world. While there are strong arguments to support this view, I personally disagree with this school of thought.

It is understandable enough why some people advocate news from media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TV, and radio, which dominate printed newspapers. Firstly, reading news online is more convenient. Thanks to technological development which provides us with opportunities to keep up with the latest news just by a click anywhere such as on the bus or car. Secondly, most people have internet connections, and only the remote areas of the world now have no access to radio or television. Therefore, everyone can update the latest national and worldwide happenings through their smartphone or laptop.

Notwithstanding the justifications for the idea that news online offers numerous benefits to meet people’s requirements, I am convinced that newspapers also play an important role in life. The first reason is that not everyone possesses the habit of accessing online magazines. For example, the elderly tend to enjoy the time breakfast or sit in the living room to have an eye on the newspaper. Another consideration is that reading the newspaper is less digital distraction. Digital devices often come with huge distractions, such as notifications, social media feeds, and advertisements. Reading a printed newspaper can avoid these online distractions, allowing for more focused reading and concentration.

In conclusion, despite the fact that such traditional newspapers have declined in general, printed newspapers are still holding a crucial position in our lives.
